Where This Data Comes From

The conversion rates, tier benchmarks, and follower percentiles in this calculator are based on our analysis of 750 Royal Road stories scraped in March 2026 across seven discovery lists. Of these, 540 had linked Patreon pages representing 378 unique creator accounts. We collected follower counts, patron counts, tier structures, pricing, and advance chapter offerings for each.

Conversion rates are based on 117 ongoing stories with publicly visible patron counts (about 28% of creators hide this data). Authors who launched Patreons and failed are underrepresented, so these estimates lean slightly optimistic.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this Patreon calculator for web serial authors?
This calculator uses real conversion rate data from our analysis of 750 Royal Road stories with 378 unique linked Patreon accounts. The three scenarios (conservative, realistic, optimistic) correspond to the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile conversion rates we observed among ongoing stories with visible patron counts. Individual results vary based on genre, content quality, how actively you promote your Patreon, and how compelling your tier benefits are.
What conversion rate should I expect from Royal Road followers to Patreon patrons?
Among authors with active Patreon communities, the median conversion rate is about 13%. The 25th percentile is 7% and the 75th percentile is about 20%. Authors who actively promote their Patreon in chapter author notes and have compelling advance chapter offers tend toward the optimistic end.
How many advance chapters should I offer?
The median for ongoing stories in our dataset is 6 advance chapters. Most use a 3-tier structure: a $1-3 support tier, a $5 tier with 5-10 advance chapters, and a $10-15 premium tier with 10+ chapters plus extras. Six chapters is a sustainable sweet spot — enough to feel valuable, maintainable for most writing schedules, and gives you runway if you need a break.
When should I start monetizing my Royal Road story?
Sooner than you think. Over half of stories with fewer than 500 followers already have Patreon links, and 72% of all successful Royal Road stories monetize. What matters is a consistent publishing cadence, not a follower threshold. There is no evidence that launching early hurts you. Beyond revenue, monetization is also about building and engaging your biggest fans — subscribers who feel invested in your story become your most loyal readers and advocates.
How does Chapter Chronicles compare to Patreon for fiction authors?
Chapter Chronicles charges 6% + $0.50 per subscription with all payment processing included. Patreon charges a 10% platform fee (standard for new creators as of 2025) plus 2.9% + $0.30 per payment for processing. On a $10 subscriber, you keep $8.90 on CC vs. $8.41 on Patreon. Beyond fees, Chapter Chronicles offers fiction-native features Patreon lacks: chapter-level content gating, reader progression analytics, churn attribution by chapter, reading velocity tracking, and a proper chapter reading interface instead of a post feed.
